August 31, 2007 Panasonic today unveiled its second digital single-lens reflex camera (SLR) the DMC-L10. The DMC-L10 features an advanced 2.5-inch free angle Live View LCD which can rotate 270 degrees, enabling versatile shooting options, and making it easy and convenient to shoot from high or low angles. There’s also a 10.1-megapixel Live MOS Sensor, the company’s Venus Engine III image processor, face detection technology, dust reduction using a Supersonic Wave Filter system and the camera uses the open format of Four Thirds lens mount system. Most importantly, it’s a significant step for Panasonic, so we’ve added the company’s launch powerpoint presentation to the image library in its entirety.

The DMC-L10 is Panasonic’s first digital SLR with Face Detection, which will focus, set auto exposure and can detect up to 15 human faces simultaneously, capturing the subjects clearly and brightly. Combining Face Detection with Panasonic’s Intelligent ISO Control settings, which measures the movement of the subject and sets the ISO level accordingly, helps give consumers crisp, blur-free images.

The Live View LCD lets users check the image on the camera after making exposure compensation adjustments, but before taking the shot. The LCD also features an Intelligent LCD function that offers an automatic brightness level control function, making the screen visible regardless of a bright sunlit or dark environment. In addition, the DMC-L10 adopts advanced hybrid-type AF system, which gives users the option to choose either the phase difference AF system or the contrast AF to suit the preferred shooting style. While in manual mode, the user can enlarge part of the subject on LCD and also freely move the magnified area for easy framing.

The DMC-L10 comes equipped with a LEICA D VARIO-ELMAR 14-50mm / F3.8-5.6 / MEGA O.I.S. lens designed specifically for a digital SLR camera to be sold as a kit, the DMC-L10K.

The DMC-L10 features an advanced free-angle 2.5-inch large LCD for full-time live view and it dramatically changes the digital SLR shooting style. You do not have to get down on bended knee, nor have to lie flat on the ground. You can see the subject even while holding the camera up high with your arms stretched.

The full-time live view further gives users more shooting flexibility and greater convenience that have never been achieved by conventional digital SLR cameras without live view capability. The DMC-L10 incorporates a Face Detection and Intelligent ISO Control function first in digital SLR cameras. The face detection system detects human faces and sets a focus and appropriate exposure to capture a face clearly and well exposed.

The Intelligent ISO Control function detects and meters the movement of the subject and sets the suitable ISO setting and the shutter speed according to the amount of the movement to suppress the generation of motion-blur in the picture. The live view lets the users check the outcome image in advance after compensating the exposure or adjusting the white balance. Furthermore, the DMC-L10 provides options of picture taste with the function called Film Mode and users can select the mode that takes the best advantage of the scene.

All these settings can be confirmed before you take the picture and the result is always as you intended. Further options are given with the aspect ratio set alternatively to 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9 aspect ratios according to the situation. Taking the horizontal and vertical lines in the picture is facilitated by the guide line to be displayed on the LCD for deciding the composition of the image. It also allows extra magnification beyond the zoom power of the lens with Extra Optical Zoom which extends the zoom range utilizing the 10.1-megapixel large Live MOS sensor when setting the recording resolution smaller and with the digital zoom.

Just putting a live view function into the digital SLR is not going to perfect the camera and that is why the DMC-L10 adopts advanced hybrid-type AF system, first in any digital SLR. A phase difference AF system works for shooting through a viewfinder while contrast AF system best supports the shooting using the live view. This is also the case with AE. A high speed, high precision TTL full aperture light metering by 49 zones multi-pattern sensing system is available for shooting through the viewfinder. On the other hand for the shooting with live view, exposure can be metered and set using the Live MOS sensor for light metering to take the whole picture information and evaluate it by 256 zones multi-pattern sensing system and gives a well-balanced exposure as a whole image.
