In the not too distant future seamless computer-facilitated verbal communication between people who do not speak the same language will be entirely possible. NEC [http://www.gizmag.com/go/2686/] is likely to be a pioneer in this field, having already conducted numerous successful trials, but this technology is still a way off and will be costly for the user. For those of you with limited patience and a limited budget, there is a very useful system available right now in the form of a prepaid interpretation card.

SetRate.com, makers of Verizon prepaid calling cards, has announced that it will now be offering the Verizon Prepaid Interpretation Service card to the public. The small plastic card - similar to that of a prepaid phone card - utilizes a global network to deliver interpretation services from world's largest interpretation company; Language Line Services. Users will dial into the service and receive interpretation via the phone using their pre-paid credit.

The card grants the purchaser round the clock access to interpreters in 170 languages. With Spanish being a prominent language in the US there is a version of the card solely for interpretation between English and Spanish speakers to make the service faster and more efficient. The other version of the card covers all featured languages with Cantonese, French, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese being the most highly requested languages. Those dealing with complex personal matters will have access to medically or legally trained and certified interpreters to provide assistance in the 22 most-spoken languages.

Traditionally costly interpretation services primarily used by large corporations are now available to the everyday person as the “Verizon Prepaid Interpretation Services card makes it affordable and accessible for all” say Steve Barrow, president and founder of SetRate.com. With denominations available from as little as US$35 and an easy to use system this is a particularly handy tool for global travelers as the service is available in the US and more than 100 international locations. Never again will you need to agonize over visa negotiations or flight bookings in your limited second language skills with those who aren’t fluent in English.
