The i865 Bubble Jet printer from Canon promises to by-pass CD labels by incorporating direct to CD-R printing as a standard feature. Designed as an all-round home or office machine and priced at $399, the i865 features print speeds of up to 23 ppm in black text and up to 16 ppm in colour, borderless photo printing, 4800 x 1200 dpi resolution, "PictBridge" functionality for print directly from a digital camera and Canon's five-colour individual ink system.

The direct CD-R printing function creates colour labels in around one minute without the hassle of aligning and attaching them. CD-LabelPrint software is included with the printer.

The five-tank ink system includes dye-based photo-grade black, magenta, cyan and yellow ink tanks for photo printing and a pigment-based black ink tank for high-quality black text. Independent tanks also means that only individual colours that have been depleted need be replaced.

The new industry standard PictBridge technology for digital camera direct printing. With a PictBridge enabled camera or digital video camera, consumers can easily print pictures at home, or the office, to any PictBridge enabled printer regardless of brand. Users simply connect the digital camera or DV camera to the printer with a USB cable. The i865 is also backwards compatible with all Bubble Jet Direct compatible cameras.

As well as the CD printing tray, the i865 incorporates a photo paper tray that supports 4" x 6" photo paper in its own separate cassette so that alternate paper sizes can be used without stopping to change paper.

An optional auto duplex printing unit (DPU-10) is also available that automatically reroutes the page for properly formatted two-sided printing.

The i865 Bubble Jet printer will be available from Canon resellers in late September for AUD$399 (incl GST).

The optional 250 sheet paper cassette (PFC-10) and optional auto duplex printing unit (DPU-10) will be available in early October, at $179 and $149 RRP respectively(incl gst).
