As it nears the end of its product cycle, Ferrari is giving the 599 GTB Fiorano an extra lease on life with a 'Handling Gran Turismo Evoluzione' (HGTE) package. The package hones the 599’s performance with the inclusion of modified suspension with stiffer springs, rear anti-roll bar and new calibration settings for the magnetorheological (a type of smart fluid that becomes a viscoelastic solid when subjected to a magnetic field) shock absorbers.
The ride height has also been adjusted to lower the car’s center of gravity, which combines with specially optimized tires featuring a compound that offers better grip and improved handling. The car's electronics have also been modified to ensure even prompter response to driver commands. Thanks to the F1 Supershift gearbox, each of the 599’s six gears can be selected at lightning speed, while a new engine software strategy has improved accelerator response.
On the exterior, Ferrari has added 20” split-rim wheels with special diamond-cut and matte silver finish, while the rear diffuser has been finished in matte black to highlight the chromed tail pipes. The exhaust silencer has also been modified, producing an even more thrilling sound under hard usage while still delivering just the right comfort levels at cruising speed.
Inside, the seats are trimmed in a new two-tone combination of leather with black Alcantara inserts, and the seat backs are trimmed entirely in carbon-fibre. Embroidered in contrast stitching on the headrest are a Prancing Horse and the words "Handling GTE".
Powered by a 6.0 litre 456 kW V12 engine, the Ferrari 599 HGTE boasts 608 Nm of torque and will thunder to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds, past 200 km/h in 11.0 seconds and on to a top speed of 330 km/h. The maximum engine speed of 8400 rpm is 900 rpm higher than the 575M Maranello and, according to Ferrari, is comparable only to that of the Enzo for a car of this type.
Anyone who had already slapped down their hard earned for the 599 will be relieved to know that, as well as being an option on new 599s, Ferrari has also made the HGTE package available as a dealer-installable kit on existing 599s. Price is dependent on the specific kits required and the model year of the car.
