Canon has announced the EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM, the first macro lens for the EOS M camera system. Another clever first is the integration of two Macro Lite flash units into the front of the lens itself to help freeze close-up subjects.

The miniature Macro Lite electronic flash units curve around the front element of the lens and give the effect of a ring flash, helping to remove shadow and darkness from subjects. Users can also adjust brightness and choose whether both units are illuminated together, or individually.

The new lens is also the first autofocus lens for interchangeable lens cameras that is capable of focusing from infinity to life-size (1x) in normal shooting and up to 1.2x magnification in Super Macro mode.

Other features include the same Hybrid IS system found on the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens to reduce camera shake, a lead screw-type STM stepping motor for smooth and quiet focusing, and an angle of view similar to a 45mm standard lens (35mm equivalent).

And in another world first, Canon says the EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM is also the lightest macro lens for mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras, weighing in at just 130 g (4.58 oz).

The new lens will be available in June for US$299.99, and Canon is currently taking preorders.

Hopefully now Nikon will bring back their macro lens with flash built in.

This is not a "flash" at all but a constant LED light.
