The Burj Khalifa, which has held the title of world's tallest building with a height of 2,717 ft (828 m) since its completion in 2010, may have its crown stolen by a new building proposed for an artificial archipelago under construction on the shores of the Caspian Sea southwest of the Azerbaijan capital, Bakou. The proposed Azerbaijan Tower would reach 3,445 ft (1,050 m) into the sky, making it even taller than Saudi Arabia's proposed Kingdom Tower by 164 ft (50 m).

According to News.Az, the Azerbaijan Tower would boast 189 floors and be built by Avesta Consern as part of the Khazar Islands development. The tower would form the centerpiece of the development, which will consist of 41 artificial islands spread over an area of 2,000 hectares (2,942 acres). The tower alone is expected to cost US$2 billion, while the city, which is designed to house one million residents and will contain everything a modern city needs - plus a Formula One racetrack - is estimated to cost $100 billion.

The announcement might come as a bit of a surprise given the current world economic climate, which has already claimed the proposed Nakheel Tower.

Avesta plans to begin construction of the Azerbaijan Tower in 2015 with a planned 2018 - 2019 completion date. The entire Khazar Islands are due for completion by 2022.

A video from Avesta showing how the Khazar Islands development will look upon completion can be viewed below.

If this structure is truly over 3400 feet in height then several other buildings on the model are among the 10 tallest in the world......

how many azerbaijanis are able to afford to take advantage of any of this beyond working in the service industry to maintain it. From the looks of things they must be planning a quite large power plant to run it.

What is striking about this design is not just its height, but how massive it is. It may be only a few stories taller than the Burj Dubai, but it appears to contain several times the amount of floor space.

Looks more like a rocket ship with lots of fuel tanks, not for me though. I don\'t like tall building to stay in or visit.

i still consider the shanghai trade centre and siers tower the two worlds tallest. when you throw spires or similar add ons on top, or stagger the volume so obviously to make your way up the list like the burg khalifa i don\'t count it, i think it\'s silly. who gave the kids the keys to the middle east? why don\'t i just float a platform on a big helium baloon attached to the ground by a cable and call it the worlds tallest building (nahnah-nah-nahnah), i think it\'s upto every individual to decide what the rules are for themselves anyway. this one on the other hand is something different all together, looks like a real building, hope i get to see it one day

This project will never be built, have you seen concern's website. So far biggest thing they have built is a 14 floor residential building. This is just marketing tactic to get investors.
