Solar Impulse 2 lands in Hawaii

Solar Impulse 2 has landed in Hawaii after completing its record-breaking longest leg of the Round the World Solar Flight, that began last March in Abu Dhabi. With pilot André Borschberg at the controls, the solar-powered, single-pilot aircraft touched down today at Kalaeloa Airport just west of Honolulu on the island of Oahu at 5:55 HAST (15:55 GMT). NASA to test Mars flying wing drone

If a NASA experimental program pans out, the first aircraft on Mars could be a flying wing. Under development at NASA Armstrong, the Prandtl–m is a flying wing glider designed to fly piggyback with a future Mars rover mission to provide low-altitude reconnaissance. F-35B makes first ski-jump launch

The British Royal Navy is a step closer to getting a fighter wing for its new Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers after the F-35B Lightning II made a successful take off from a ski-jump on June 19 at Naval Air Station in Patuxent River, Maryland. The vertical and/or short take-off and landing (VSTOL) variant of the F-35B is being jointly tested by an Anglo-American team as part of the program to bring the aircraft into service with the Royal Navy and the US Marine Corps.Read More

First installed electromagnetic aircraft launch system demonstrated

The age of steam is over – at least, as far as US aircraft carriers are concerned. At Newport News, Virginia, the USS Gerald R Ford (CVN 78) successfully test fired a revolutionary Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS), which replaces the steam catapults that have been standard carrier equipment since the 1950s. The test made a literal splash because it involved an unmanned dead-weight sled rather than an aircraft, which landed about a hundred yards off the bow of the still under construction vessel.Read More

Airbus H160 helicopter makes its first flight

A couple of days ago, we heard how Airbus Helicopters had announced the concept phase of its planned X6 heavy-lift helicopter. That aircraft will borrow some features from the company's new H160 medium-lift model. Although the H160 was introduced at the Heli-Expo trade show back in March, its first flight took place on June 13th and was announced this week at the Paris Air Show.Read More
